Our classes are mixed age for children 2-9 years old. Our outdoor location, play based philosophy, and child-driven curriculum allow for children to be engaged and inspired to explore, observe, and learn in nature. We have a small class size, low student to teacher ratio, and meet outside in all weather. Our small and dynamic community and environment make working at Brooklyn Nature Days both exciting and an opportunity for growth.
Candidates should:
Be comfortable & prepared to work outdoors in all types of weather.
Have a love for, and experience working with young children.
Have an interest in nature, animals, and the outdoors.
Be willing to get messy and immerse themselves in child-directed play and discovery.
Have strong interpersonal skills.
Be responsible, patient, and punctual.
Be comfortable collaborating with a team of teachers.
Be flexible and adaptable to our changing logistics and environment at all times.
All teachers working with us should be up to date on all vaccinations included vaccinated and boosted against covid. If you have a medical exemption please let us know.
Teachers should be CPR/First aid certified (or willing to become certified upon the start of employment)
Our summer programming differs slightly from our other semesters. Here are the basics teachers should know for summer 2024:
Our summer session runs for 8 weeks, beginning on Monday, June 17th, 2024 and ending on Friday, August 9th, 2024. Families may choose which weeks they would like to register their child. {Additional enrollment details here}
There are no classes on the following dates: Wednesday, June 19th, Thursday, July 4th, and Friday, July 5th
Children are divided into 3 age groups:
Sparrows Group: Children between the age of 2-3
Robins Group: Children entering pre-K & K, Sept 2024
Hawks Group: Children entering 1st-4th grade, Sept. 2024
Families enroll their children by the week, with all children in Sparrows and Robins groups attending M-F, 9am-1pm and all children in Hawks groups attending M-F, 9am-3pm
There will be a full week (M-F) of paid staff meetings the week prior to the start of the session (June 10-June 14)
Teachers should be available to work all 8 weeks of our summer program, including training week. (9 weeks total: Monday, June 10th-Friday, August 9th, 2024)
All teachers working with us for the summer session should be vaccinated and boosted against covid prior to the start of the summer session.
Teachers should be CPR/First aid certified (or willing to become certified before the start of the summer session)
A letter from your physician indicating you are in general good health to work is required by the DOHMH
Additional Details Regarding Qualifications & Compensation:
We are hiring lead teaching positions and co-teaching positions. Please see details below regarding qualifications and compensation. Please note: All current positions available are seasonal. Based on performance, teachers that work with us for the summer may be extended an option to continue with us during the school year pending position availability.
Lead Teachers, Summer 2024:
Currently pursuing or completed a BA or BS, not necessarily in education
At least 2 years professional experience working with and leading groups of young children between the ages of 2-9 in indoor or outdoor settings
Hourly pay rate range from $24-$27 p/hr for the season. Lead-teacher compensation based on previous experience and overall qualifications.
Co-Teachers, Summer 2024:
At least 1 year professional experience working with groups of young children between the ages of 2-9 in indoor or outdoor settings
Hourly pay rate range from $20-$25 p/hr for the season. Co-teacher compensation based on previous experience and overall qualifications.
